April 2004 - Chateau Previous  Next

Here are our humble accommodations.  The main floor had 14 foot ceiling, the second floor had 12 foot ceilings, and the third floor had 10 foot ceilings.  We had access to 10 bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, kitchen, dinning room for 24, sitting room, salon, recreation room, and laundry room.  Some of the rooms were closed for renovation.  We weren't able to find out much about the history of the chateau other than it was built in the 17th century.  We aren't sure why a stone above the servant's entrance at the base of the circular tower had 1849 chiseled on it.  The growing town of Beauvais now sits at the edge of the property whereas the chateau used to be in the country.  You'd never know you were close to a road or building until you left the property.

Here are the family members that were able to make it on this trip.

These photos are of opposite sides of the salon that over looked the back yard.  One neat thing about most of the rooms is you can enter from the hallway or move from room to room through the connecting doors.  Notice the connecting door to another sitting room in the photo on the right.  Most of the bedrooms shared one or two connecting doors so families could share two or three connecting bedrooms.  Almost all of the rooms also had fireplaces, but since there is a modern heating system, they weren't being used.  The four 80 gallon hot water tanks ensured there was plenty of hot water.

Betsi is on the stairs going up to the third floor.  Down the wide, tall hallway were doors to four bedrooms, including our two.  The hallway windows overlooked the front of the house, while our bedrooms overlooked the back.  Ainsley loved sitting in this antique, wooden high chair for breakfast even though she was a bit too big for it.

The St. Pierre Cathedral in the center of Beauvais was enormous.  Ryan liked the gargoyles in the photo on the right.
