    Remodel the Kitchen Previous  Next

Our house is 16 year old now and the kitchen looked dated.  As you can see, it had dark brown cupboards and a tan countertop.  We decided white cabinets, a navy blue corian countertop and pewter door knobs for the cabinets would look good together.

After the shock of discovering how much it would cost for new cabinets or to reface the existing ones, we decided to paint our existing ones for $40.  Betsi used two coats of primer and two coats of paint.  After 25-30 hours of labor, the cabinets looked great.

Getting the kitchen countertop installed correctly was a month long nightmare that should have only taken a few hours.  After dozens of phone calls, some letter writing, several visits by the various contractors, and taking 3.5 days off of work, the countertop is installed and we received a significant refund.

Betsi used contact paper with a floral print for the doors.  Only the bottom doors were covered, as it looked too busy to have both the upper and lower doors covered.  The next step was to paint the kitchen walls a pale blue with sage green trim.  Unfortunately, the green didn't look good, so it was repainted "Jeffrey Blue" that is a bluish-gray.

The walls are such a pale blue, that it's difficult to see in these pictures.  The trim was repainted and a second layer of curtains was added to match the floral print on the doors.  The blue rectangle on the island is a cutting board made from a scrap piece of the countertop material.  The stove really looks out of place now.
