In the most extreme example, a hard drive failure requires reinstalling Windows, Windows updates, other software, data, and user settings. This can take 12 to 25 hours of sitting in front of a computer no matter how fast your computer is or your skill level. Life's too short. Make a backup that will restore everything within a few hours. You need to at least backup the digital photos.

Disaster can strike in several ways.

  • Accidentally delete or save over an important file
  • Computer virus, worm or trojan can disable your computer
  • A child could accidentally disable your computer with a few mouse clicks
  • Theft
  • Natural disaster such as fire, flood, hurricane, tornado, earthquake, or lightning strike
  • Hard drive failure
  • Software installation problems
